Music

Aims

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Intent

At Moss Lane School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. We want to inspire our children to be creative by exposing them to high quality teaching. We give our children the ability to learn about the different dimensions and develop skills to plan, practice, perform and evaluate their own and others work. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different genres and styles of music. Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives.

Our planning follows a curriculum map that specifies the skills progression throughout the school. Year group planning builds on previous knowledge and skills to ensure there is progression in skills and knowledge during each child’s musical journey with us. Year group planning enables cross curriculum links and allows children to gain knowledge, master skills, plan, prepare and perform.

Implementation

  • To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in music, we have recently updated the school’s long term plan to ensure that we provide a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school.
  • At Moss Lane School, we deliver the music curriculum through both class music lessons and a weekly singing assembly.
  • The Kapow and Sparkyard schemes of work along with seasonal focuses are used from Year R-2 to ensure a wide exposure to different genres of music, with lots of practical opportunities to explore and develop as musicians and singers. By linking into the new MMC we can ensure that children are introduced to a broad repertoire of music.
  • Our children will learn that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. They will be inspired and engaged by music education.
  • Music lessons will engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and develop their talent as musicians, and in turn increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
  • As the children progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen and appraise.
  • Singing skills are taught along with links to the dimensions of music they are learning.
  • The children at Moss Lane participate in school performances such as a Harvest assembly, Christmas productions and an end of year production by Year 2. We also provide additional opportunities involving outside agencies.
  • The school performs regularly at events in the local community; especially the Godalming Christmas Lights event which all children are able to take part in. The children are also encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise regarding music lessons that they take part in outside of school.
  • Music assessment is ongoing to inform teachers with their planning, lesson activities and differentiation. Summative assessment is completed at the end of each unit to inform leaders of the improvements or skills that still need to be embedded. Music is monitored throughout all year groups using a variety of strategies such as lesson observations and pupil interviews.
  • Children at Moss Lane show a deep love of music; an appreciation for the skills needed to learn an instrument and a passion for singing as a result of a carefully planned and passionately delivered curriculum.
  • Throughout their time at Moss Lane children have access to a varied and engaging programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon.
  • Our children enthusiastically talk about their music learning and the knowledge and skills they have acquired.
  • In-school concerts and participation in wider opportunities show children performing competently and confidently.
  • Children build their confidence and skills through their participation in music whether this be in class, school performances, class assemblies, choir or performances out of school.
