Year 1

At Moss Lane, teachers ensure that all children are well supported during their transition from the EYFS into their first year in Key Stage 1. As well as following the National Curriculum, life in Year 1 still has many features of Early Years provision such as play based and active learning. This means that children access the curriculum in a creative and interactive way. In our classrooms you may find home corners, modelling areas, tuff trays and reading areas.

In English, we learn from and read a range of books and traditional tales. We use the Talk 4 Writing scheme as one of our strategies to enable  children to delve deeper into stories and are given opportunities to become story tellers! We use our phonic knowledge to help us write our own stories, leaflets, poems and much more.

In maths, we become more confident in counting up to 100, counting one more and one less and ordering numbers. We learn how to add and subtract numbers to 20, identify 2D and 3D shapes and tell the time using hands-on resources to help us along the way.

In science, we investigate the four seasons, animals including humans, plants and different materials.

Our topics in Year 1 are:

  •          Busy Bodies
  •          Let’s Celebrate!
  •          Commotion in the Ocean
  •          I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff!
  •          Backpacks and Passports

We use these topics to enrich our foundation subjects for example, during our topic Backpacks and Passports, children learn about Amelia Earhart and visit Brooklands Museum. Many other exciting trips and visits happen throughout the year to foster children’s love of learning. We also use home learning, known as ‘Wonder Books’, to strengthen links between school and home life.

Year 1 children are supported to become independent learners to help prepare them for their next steps emotionally, socially and academically.

We create many memories and achieve great things!
