Eat the Rainbow!

Are you living in a world of smiley faces and chicken nuggets and want a rainbow to join them on your child’s plate?  It may seem a lifetime away for your child to try new foods but there are things you can do to make a start on this journey by firstly understanding and changing a few smaller things so it doesn’t seem too large a goal. Trying new food won’t happen over night and there are smaller steps to take first.  If  you need support with your child’s fussy eating contact our HSLW Mrs Karen Sutton.

VEG POWER!

As part of Veg Power's on-going mission to encourage the UK to eat more veg, they would like to make it easier for parents and carers to add more veg to children's lunchboxes. Recent research from Leeds University found that only one in five children had any vegetables or salad in their packed lunch.

To support parents, Veg Power has developed a ’60 Second Lunchbox Hacks’ PDF. It features easy-to-implement ideas and serves to make this task as simple as possible.

This is available below.

Good emotional health underpins effective learning and promotes positive interactions.  All children have opportunities to develop their thinking and interpersonal skills and have the chance to practice and apply these skills in various environments. Newly acquired skills are practised outside the formal curriculum extending to all areas of school life and beyond, with the school keen to involve families in their child’s learning journey.

We regularly host special events in order to educate the children in alternative ways.  This often requires the support of others in order to make them more successful. Such events have seen the children having breakfast with their families and taking part in Multi Skills Sports Festival, as well as a healthy eating learning session from the staff at Waitrose as part of Food Awareness Week. Other national campaigns are also supported such as Feeling Good Week, "Wrap, Splat and Hat" and the ‘Golden Boot Challenge.’  This annual feature encourages pupils to leave the car at home and travel to and from school in healthier ways. One year we even had someone coming to school on their pony!!

Oral Health Promotion from Change 4 Life

Our vision is that every child is given the best start in life and the opportunity to grow up free from dental decay. Tooth decay is largely preventable, yet it remains a serious problem.

We aim to improve the oral health of all children. As part of SUGAR SMART, we want to inform how fizzy drinks affect your child’s teeth. Sugar in fizzy drinks combines with bacteria in your mouth to form acid, which attacks the teeth. Diet or ‘sugar-free’ soda contains its own acid, which also can damage teeth. Each attack lasts about twenty minutes and starts over with every sip of soda you take. These on-going acid attacks weaken the tooth enamel.

How can you cut down the amount of sugar you have in your child’s diet? The easiest way to cut down the amount of sugar you have in your diet is through simple swaps: Change fizzy drinks to water. Choose lower fat milks. Choose sugar-free or No Sugar options. It is also important to be aware of drinks that are fizzy but contain no sugar.
